
Early Detection of Tailings Dam Subsidence
Tailings facilities can experience gradual settlement and deformation that may not be apparent through periodic ground inspections alone. Identifying emerging deformation early is critical for prioritising field inspections and maintaining confidence in the stability of dams and embankments.
Our Approach
InSpectiv Labs uses satellite-based InSAR to establish a high-resolution ground-motion baseline across the tailings facility and its surrounding environment. Persistent Scatterer analysis identifies stable measurement points and reveals spatial patterns of deformation over time.
The analysis focuses on:
- Embankment and dam-wall deformation
- Progressive settlement zones
- Localised deformation hotspots
- Changes in deformation rate
- Surrounding infrastructure and ground response
Outcome
The resulting deformation intelligence provides mine operators and geotechnical teams with an independent, repeatable view of ground behaviour, helping them identify areas requiring closer investigation before deformation becomes a larger operational or safety concern.
